1.) GENERATION OF COMPUTER

1.) What is generation of computer?
Ans :- Generation in computer   terminology is a change in technology a computer is/was being used. Initially, the generation term was used to distinguish between varying hardwar technologies. But nowadays, generation includes both hardware and software, which together make up an entire computer system.

2.) How many generations of computer are there? Describe them.

Ans :- There are totally five computer generations known till date. Each generation has been discussed in detail along with their time period and characteristics. Here approximate dates against each generations have been mentioned which are normally accepted.

The various generations of computer are follows :-
i.) First generation (1946-1959)
ii.) Second Generation (1959-1965)
iii.) Third Generation (1965-1971)
iv.) Fourth Generation (1971-1980)
v.) Fifth Generation (1980-till date)

3.) What is the First Generation of computer?
Ans :-    The computers that were manufactured between 1946 to 1959 are known as First Generation of computers.
First Generation of computer
These computers required switching devices and the basic switching devices were Vacuum tubes. These tubes, like electric bulbs, produced a lot of heat and were prone to frequent fusing of the installations, therefore, were very expensive and could be afforded only by very large organisations. In this generation mainly batch processing operating system were used. Punched cards, paper tape, and magnetic tape were used as input and output devices. The computers in this generation used machine code as programming language.

Fore Example :-       ENIAC,
                           EDVAC, UNIVAC
                          IBM-650, IBM-701
Demerits :
          •  Too bulky in size
          •  Unreliable
          •  Air Conditioning (A/C) required
          •  Prone to frequent hardware                       failure
          •  Non-Portable.
          •  Consumed lot of electricity

4.) What is the Second Generation of Computer?
Ans :- The Computers that were manufactured from 1959 to 1965 are known as Second Generation of computers. These computers used a more advance technology that First generation by replacing the Vacuum Tubes with 'Transistors'. In this                  generation, magnetic cores were used as primary memory and magnetic tape and high-level programming languages like FORTRANCOBOL were used. The computers used batch processing and multi programming operating system.

                            MERITS:
       • smaller in size.
       • More reliable.
       • Less heat generation.
       • Fast computation.
       • Less prone to hardware failures.

                          DEMERITS
       • Air Conditioning still require.
       • Frequent maintenance required.
       • Commercial production was.                       difficult and costly.

5.) What is the Third Generation of Computer ?

Ans :- The Computers that were manufactured between 1965 to 1971 are called Third Generation of computers. In this generation, the Large Scale Integration (LSI) technology replaced the Transistors with the 'Integrated Circuits' (IC). A single IC has many transistors, resistors and capacitors along with the associated circuitry. The IC was invented by Jack Kirby. This development made computers smaller in size, reliable and efficient. In this generation remote processing, time programming operating system were used. High-level languages (FORTRAN-II TO IV, COBOL, PASCAL PL/1, BASIC, ALGOL-68 etc.) were used during this generation.
For Example :- IBM-370/168, IBM 360                    series, Honeywell-6000 series,
            PDP (Personal Data Processor),
            CDC 6600, TDC-316
Third generations of computer

                              MERITS
    • Low cost
    • High speed
    • Large memory
    • Smaller in size
    • Less power consumption
    • Cheapest among all generations

6.) What is the Fourth Generation of computer?
Ans :- The Computers that were manufactured from 1971 to 1980 are called Fourth Generation of computers. These computers used very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits and uses 'Microprocessors'. VLIS circuits having about 5000 transistor and other circuit elements and their associate circuits on a single chip made it possible to have microcomputers of Fourth Generation. These computers became more powerful, compact, reliable, and affordable. As a result, it gave rise to Personal Computer. (PC) revolution. In this generation time sharing, real time, networks, distributed operating system were used. All the high-level language likes C, C++, DBASE etc. were used in this generation.
For Example : HP 3000, DEC 10, STAR 1000, PDP 11, CRAY-1 (Super Computer), CRAY X MP (Super Computer )
Fourth generation of computer
7.) What is the Fifth Generation of Computer ?
Ans :- The period of Fifth Generation is 1980-till date. In the Fifth Generation the VLIS technology became ULSI(Ultra Large Scale Integration) technology, resulting in the production of microprocessor chips having ten million electronic components. This generation is based on parallel processing hardware and AI (Artificial Intelligence) software. AI is an emerging branch in computer science, which interprest means and method of making computers think like human beings. All the high-level languages like and C++, Java, .Net etc. Are used in this generation and Optic fiber technology to handle Artificial Intelligence. AI includes:
Robotics, Neural network, Game Playing,
Development of expert systems to make
decisions in real life situations, Natural
language understanding and generation.
For Example :- Desktop, Laptop, Note                  Book, Ultra Book, Chrome Book

7.) What is Mainframe Computer?
Ans:- These computers generally are 32 bit machines or higher. Mainframe is very large in size and is an expensive computer capable of supporting hundreds or even thousands of users simultaneously. Mainframe executes many programs concurrently and supports many simultaneous execution of programs.

For Ex.:- DEC, HP, IBM, ES 9000, etc.

Note:- These computers are suited to big organizations.

8.) What is Mini Computers?
Ans :- The term Mini Computer is originated in 1960s when it was realized that many computing tasks do not require an expensive mainframe computers. It can be solved by a small inexpensive computer. It is a midsize midsize multi-processing system capable of supporting up to 250 users simultaneously.

For Ex.:- Digital VAX.

Note:- It supports multi-user environment that can be solved by a small inexpensive computer and CPU time is being shared by different users.

9.) What is Micro Computers?
Ans:- These computers are known as Micro Computers because of its CPU which is a microprocessor. They are typically used as a single user computer. Although present day Micro Computers are very powerful.

For Ex:- AS/400,     RS/600,     HP/9000.
10.) What is PC (Personal Computer)?
Ans:- It is also known as PC. This type of computer is just like Micro Computer. Personal computers are smaller in size and very simple to use. It is a user friendly machine. A single user can work at a time PC has developed in 1981 in which 8088 microprocessors were used. Its storage capacity can be increased by inserting Hard Disk (HDD). It is also known as PCXT (Personal Computer Extended Technology). It is generally used in Home, Office, Business, Education, Entertainment, Store data, Publication field. Note : In 1984    80286 microprocessors were used.
Then name changes to (PC-AT)  personal Computer Advance Technology.

11.) What is a Desktop Computer?
